Why Nsandhu Law Is Among the Criminal Defence Lawyers Hamilton Clients Recommend

Trust isn’t given. It’s earned, one case at a time. Nsandhu Law has built a strong reputation across Ontario for direct communication and personal attention. You’ll work with your lawyer, not a rotating team of assistants. Every case starts with a free, private consultation. We explain the charge, the evidence, and your options in plain language — no confusing legal jargon. Our block fee model means you’ll always know your costs before you commit.

One of the Criminal Lawyers Hamilton Clients Trust: Nimrata Sandhu

Nimrata Sandhu leads Nsandhu Law. She has more than 25 years of experience defending people against serious criminal charges across Ontario. She’s known for tough, strategic representation and honest communication. Every client gets her full attention, not a junior associate’s. She brings the same dedication to every case, no matter where in Ontario it’s heard.

Close to Home: In-Person and Virtual Meetings

Hamilton sits within the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, about an hour from our Toronto office. That means in-person meetings are realistic, not just a video call away. We also offer phone and video consultations for anyone who prefers to start remotely. For court appearances, we plan the logistics with you, so nothing is left to chance. Whether you’d rather meet face-to-face or start with a call, criminal lawyers Hamilton clients rely on are just a short drive — or a click — away.

This same approach extends to the communities around Hamilton, too. If your case is being heard in Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Dundas, Waterdown, or Burlington, we can represent you there as well — the court process and our approach stay the same, no matter which Hamilton-area courthouse your matter lands in.

We also regularly represent clients from Glanbrook, Binbrook, Flamborough, and Winona — if your matter touches any part of the Hamilton-Wentworth region, we can help. Hamilton’s growth over the past decade, from downtown redevelopment to expanding suburbs like Waterdown and Ancaster, means more residents, more daily traffic along routes like the Lincoln Alexander Parkway, the Red Hill Valley Parkway, and the QEW, and more everyday contact with Hamilton Police Service. That growth is part of why local court experience matters — knowing how Hamilton Crown counsel and the John Sopinka Courthouse actually operate is different from reading about it for the first time on your file.

Charges We Defend for Clients in Hamilton

Our team handles serious criminal matters heard at Hamilton’s John Sopinka Courthouse and across Ontario, including:

Violent Offences

Facing a robbery or assault charge can turn your life upside down overnight. We build evidence-based defence strategies. We challenge the prosecution’s case at every stage, in and out of court.

DUI and Impaired Driving

Impaired driving charges often bring licence suspension and steep fines. We review the police stop, the testing method, and the paperwork. We look for the errors that can reduce your charge or get it dismissed.

For a closer look at how each BAC threshold plays out, see our guide to Ontario’s legal alcohol limit for driving.

Financial Crimes

Fraud and theft charges involve dense, technical evidence. We dig into the details. Our goal is to protect your assets, your reputation, and your future. If your charge involves theft specifically, see our guide to theft charges in Ontario for the penalties and defences that typically apply.

Sexual Offences

These charges demand a defence built on discretion and strength. We protect your privacy, your reputation, and your career through confidential, focused representation. Our Sexual Assault Defence Lawyer team handles these cases across the GTHA with that same discretion.

Firearms and Weapons Charges

A weapons charge can follow you for years. We examine every warrant and every piece of evidence. We fight to protect your freedom.

Drug Offences

Drug charges range from simple possession to trafficking. Either way, the stakes are high. We build a defence strategy shaped around your specific case.

What Happens After You're Charged in Hamilton

Criminal cases in Hamilton are heard at the John Sopinka Courthouse on Main Street East. It houses both the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice — unusual for one building, and useful to know if your case moves between the two.

The courthouse is located at 45 Main Street East, Hamilton, Ontario L8N 2B7, at the intersection of Main Street East and John Street South — easy to find whether you’re coming from downtown, Stoney Creek, or the Mountain. Court offices are generally open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

If police hold you after an arrest, you’ll have a bail hearing first. This decides whether you’re released, and under what conditions, while your case moves forward. From there, your case usually goes through a first appearance, evidence disclosure from the Crown, and pre-trial talks. If it isn’t resolved by then, it heads to trial. Every stage has a deadline, and missing one can hurt your case. The sooner your lawyer reviews the evidence, the stronger your defence. That includes police notes, test results, and video.

Questions We Hear From Hamilton Clients

Before You Call

Do I need a Hamilton-based lawyer?

Not necessarily. What matters more is experience with Ontario’s courts. Nsandhu Law represents clients across the province, including Hamilton, in person and by video.

How much does a criminal lawyer cost?

It depends on your charge and how complex your case is. We use block fees instead of hourly billing. You’ll know your costs upfront, before you commit.

Can I get Legal Aid?

Possibly, depending on your income. Legal Aid Ontario may cover part or all of your defence. Ask us about this, and about block fees, during your free consultation.

Which police service investigates criminal charges in Hamilton?

Most Hamilton-area charges are investigated by Hamilton Police Service, which polices the city directly — unlike neighbouring regions such as York or Halton, which are policed by their respective regional forces. Knowing which service investigated your file, and how that service typically handles disclosure requests, is one more reason local experience matters.

After You’ve Been Charged

What should I do first?

Stay calm. Give police your name and address, nothing more. Call a criminal lawyer as soon as you can. Early advice protects your rights.

What happens at a bail hearing?

The court decides if you’re released while your case continues. It looks at your ties to the community, your record, and flight risk. A strong release plan improves your odds.

My case is moving from the Ontario Court of Justice to Superior Court. What does that mean?

More serious charges can move from the Ontario Court of Justice to the Superior Court of Justice, sometimes with a jury trial. In Hamilton, both courts sit in the same building, but the process, the timelines, and the stakes change. Your lawyer should walk you through what’s different the moment your case is transferred.

Will this affect my job or immigration status?

It might. Some convictions affect professional licences or immigration status. That’s one more reason to get advice early, not after the fact.
